Building for the Kids

Placetailor joined forces with Josh Rose Wood of Rose Wood Architects to make the long-standing hope of expanding the Hawthorne Youth and Community Center (HYCC) a reality. A grassroots, community-based nonprofit,  HYCC’s mission is to “provide year-round educational, vocational, cultural and recreational programs for community youth and adults, recognizing and celebrating the rich diversity of the community, and providing a forum for residents to work together to improve the quality of life in Roxbury’s Highland Park neighborhood.”

The expansion added 800 square feet including a teen space, media center, gallery, kitchen renovation, much needed additional storage, an office for HYCC staff and ADA upgrades. The expansion is a “deep energy retrofit,” aiming to reduce overall energy usage by 80-90% through the creation of an airtight building envelope and system upgrades. To our knowledge, this will be one of the first energy retrofits for a community center in Boston, if not New England.

In addition to Rose Wood Architects, we also partnered with Boston Building Resources and YouthBuild Boston in an effort to build community and reduce construction costs.
